What I've Been Up To: Gosh! I feel old... senior chiefs who were in A school when I was an ensign! I spent my first tour in the Navy at the ASW school in San Diego, April 1978 - May 1981. I know that none of the fine sonar techs checking out this site ever dealt with me when I was Legal Officer there... but, then again, who knows? I feel that I was "raised" by sonar techs, having been a "fresh-caught" ensign (and a blond, to boot). Y'all must not have done too bad a job - I did manage to retire as a commander in the Naval Reserve. Any of you who remember me from those days, drop me a line, okay? It gets mighty cold here in Ohio in the winter.

What I've Been Up To: I feel ancient! I never operated a sonar with an SQQ designation. I thought the QCT, followed by the QHB, with a TRR and an ASAP was the ultimate sonar system; good for the next millennium and beyond. As for fire control systems, the Mouse Trap, Depth Charges (K and Y guns), Hedgehogs, and Weapon Able, were awesome. I wish Santa would bring me an SQQ (whatever) for Christmas so I could compare the old with the new. Oh well, we did win the greatest anti-submarine war ever fought with "ping-train-listen." And our young Sonar Technicians will win our future wars, if, God forbid, they need to. We left them a legacy. Merry Christmas to all. I hope Santa doesn't lose contact with any of you.

What I've Been Up To: Do any of you Ping Jockeys remember a book titled "Naval Traditions, Customs, and Usage," authored by a gentleman named Lovette, and published by the U.S. Naval Institute in 1939. It's been out of print for years, but I found several copies in the Barnes and Noble internet inventory, and ordered one for $16. There is an updated version titled "Naval Ceremonies and Customs" but the cost is $70; too rich for my blood. Anyhow, the older copy is loaded with myriad articles, trivia, and even songs, as suggested by the title: The origin of the Shellback and Golden Dragon ceremonies, passing honors at sea (and why U.S. warships never dip their colors to foreign warships), why cooks must shine the ship's bell, why the galley smokestack (which no longer exists) was called the Charlie Noble, why Navy uniforms have bell bottoms, why coffee is called Joe, Saint Elmo's fire, and so on. Fascinating stuff. If John Bedford agrees, I might extract some of the more interesting items for inclusion in the Ping Jockey. Anyhow, the Navy is probably more steeped in tradition and slang than the other services. So, excuse me for clogging up the log with this tangential gibberish. Just passing time. End of message. Over.

What I've Been Up To: O.K. Jim Heimstead, I consider myself to have been duly chastised by Double A's defender. Actually, A.A. and I were close friends and had a wonderful time as instructors in San Diego in the late 40's. (My God, that was 50 years ago!) I remember that we had a purple shaft (with wings) hanging from the ceiling in the instructors office, and although it was free to randomly rotate, it was always pointed at Double A. I also remember that A.A. was fascinated with the newly implemented concept of helicopter (dipping) Sonar, so much so that he devised a new rating badge for airborne Ping Jockeys. It was the same as the traditional rating badge, except that the arrow pointed down. That was the most innovative thing that A.A. ever did. As for Lenihan; he was indeed a dedicated Jock, at both San Diego and Key West. He and I were volleyball and handball addicts. He was good. I wasn't. But he was so good, he made me look good. What a character. I was so sorry to hear of his demise. And speaking of characters; weren't we all? And that's the end of these footprints. Over.

What I've Been Up To: It was good to see Max Drumheller leaving his footprints in the log! Say what you will Max, A.A. Moore showed me the way. When I served with him, he didn't have the BT. He was too busy beating on me to get the Operation's section lesson plans written! Chief Stewart (Sir Charles) was beating on his head! Where was Lenihan in those days?...he was out playing softball and having fun. Fleet Sonar School - Key west had a team that no one could beat thanks to Lenihan! Fleet Sonar School - Key West had the best of everything...including drill teams! John Paul (Skull) Johnson turned out a precision team! They could out drill team anybody. With respect to Al Fitz below, he asked what happened to Tauch and Murphy? Well, according to what he said, they must have made a mistake! One more thing for Max...I probably did have my head in a vacuum in those days but Moore still is "the man"! Jim Heimstead aka " vacuum head"

The last time I saw him in Key West in the 60's,he still had the BT in his hand. The same one. What I've Been Up To: Good start, need to get the word out more. I found this site from a ex-IC man who is a Maine trooper now!! Go figure. Served on diesels, boomer and SSN's 564,622(B),315,410.421,571,695 and 688 from 62 to 84. Retired in Charleston, S.C. (first duty station was also Charleston). Started out as a SOSSN(SU) and retired as a STS1(SS). Robert Walsh Sr, are you the Bob Walsh who would keep everybodies cars in Charleston and used them while we were on patrol? Funny, I liked listening on the sonar and do the good (fun) stuff, didn't much care for the rest of the things associated with the rate (electronics, politics, etc). So I retired, went to college and trained to be a nurse and loved it every minute it while it lasted. Let me tell ya, assisting in delivering babies IS fun. Also worked in ER/Trauma and it is even better than TV makes it out to be. Now stuck at home medically retired, so email will be answered smartly. (smoked too much, lung cancer, you guys still smoking, QUIT, it's never too late to quit). Will join the NSA soonest.

What I've Been Up To: Great Site. I see a few names in here that I recognize. Like Duane. One thing he failed to mention is that the Kinkaid was the first ship in Naval history to have an all gay commissioning crew. I was on Active Duty 2/76 thru 2/82, 26CX Tech. Uss Kirk FF-1087 from 9/76 til 1/78 Yokosuka then to "C" school. USS Fanning FF-1076 12/78 til 2/83.From 8/83 til 3/95 I worked for GE Field Programs doing RACs on 26 AXRs, CXs, 53s and 53As. Moved over to the 89 shortly after it showed up. Worked all of those elements except the 116. Mostly doing INCOs and ECs. The last 4 yrs of that was in Syracuse NY. Snows too much up there so I came back to sunny SD and worked at FTSCPAC with Code 210(Surface Sonar). I now work at FTSCPAC, for the gubment, in the IC/NAV code on a Data Multiplexing System found on the new DDGs.

I was born on the 29-31 series sonar (RDT hot stuff), bread on the AN/SQS-23 series, matured with the 26CX&53 systems, and grew old with the 18 & 19 systems. 26 years as a "TINCAN" sailor and have meet the best people this old planet has to offer in the ASW arena. Sonarmen, be they Skimmer or bubleheads, are a unique group of folks ..... in that they understand that "ASW is an ART not a science". One more thought " All the engineers and all the technology, can not change the water conditions". I look forward to becoming a part of the fellowship of Sonarmen through this association. Lets go active!!!!!! Boone

By todays standards I guess that was sort of like beating on a garbage can lid with a chipping hammer. Keep this fine site going! Looking forward to it's evolution.

What I've Been Up To: Hi John: Great site! I'm proud to have served a small part in the creation of this site. We owe a great deal to your leadership, John. We have made great strides indeed! Look at the comments Frank Crawford made in the first "Ping Jockey" He contacted " a few Newspapers" to get the word out and in a scant few years, we now have world wide coverage! A special thanks to our great friends at Implex Systems Inc. With out Stuart Devaan and Eric, we wouldn't have a home. NSA is grateful Stu! jimmybro

What I've Been Up To: After many months of effort, the National Sonar Association finally has its very own web page. I am proud to be a member of this very fine organization. Please give a special Thank You to James Heimstead, NSA member, for his inspiration and continuing efforts to make this page a reality. Also - thanks to Stuart DeVaan at Implex Systems for hosting our page and helping us get started. We truly appreciate your assistance. I personally welcome criticisms and comments from non - members and members alike. It is the association's goal to improve this site regularly. Again - Thanks! from John Bedford. NSA Pres. 1998
