What I've Been Up To: Glad to find and join this site. Hope I'm not too old for this group. Operators & Maint. School (classes 121A & 121C) in Apr. & Sept.'44 at West Coast Sound School in San Diego. Plankowner and served in PCS 1401 (didn't even have a name) Oct.'44 - May '46. This was a round bottomed, wooden hull ship, that looked like Cousteau's 'Calypso'. None of the gear designations in the log sound familiar. Ours was the initial installation of a Westinghouse QJB, which was pretty advanced back then. Don't imagine there are too many ping jockeys around from the 'splinter fleet' but would like to hear from any that are, or anyone else for that matter.

"B" school and AN/SQS-23 school San Diego in '61 & '62. Reported to the Dewey DLG-14 in Norfolk. In '63 went to FSS Key West for MK-38 Computer training. Went to Mayport and the USS Charles R. Ware DD-865. Made Chief there. After 3 years to the day, departed for San Diego and Shore duty. Made E-8 in '68. Got tired of shore duty and in late '68 went back east to Philadelphia to re-commission the Farragut DLG-6. We finally got out of the yards in '70 and made a cruise to South America (Unitas). I'll never forget that one. Went back to shore duty (Key West). One year there and transferred to Charleston and MOTU-10. Retired there in '76. Spent most of my cicilian life installing RDT's and UQS's in foreign ships until 1986. Now I have a desk job with Lockheed Martin and seriously considering retiring again.

Guess I'll find out....Anyhow, Mr. Johnson, Drumheller, Flenniken and many others of you, it has been an honor to meet with most of you each week for the past 4 years since we started honoring the top "A" school graduate from each class. I hope that this will continue through the years to come. Not just for the honor graduate, but for each one of those kids there each week, you can see the light in their eyes, that those who have gone before them still show a genuine interest for their accomplishments as an "A" school graduate as they begin their career in the finest rate the Navy has to offer.

We had the SQS 23 and was selected the best ASW ship in the Alantic Fleet in 1964 or 1965. We were in Destroyer Squadron 32 assigned to Task Group Alpha and spent many happy hours being the best at what we were trained to do. I am sure than anyone from the crew of the USS Sea Leopard SS483 1964-1966 will remember us. Just returned from a reunion for the Eugene A Greene at which we had 5 plank owner shipmates (1945) through shipmates that trained the Spanish Sailors when it was sold to the Spanish Navy (1972). I looked at attending your reunion for October 1999 and wished I could go, but must work to pay for going to this one in September. I didn't see anyone in the guest book that I knew. Maybe more people will find this site. Jon Bunford if you surf in, contact me. Thank all of you at SONAR SHACK for an interesting web page.

What I've Been Up To: We have been remodeling part of the "shack" over the past 4-6 weeks, concentrating on the membership page. During the course of effort, the membership function was tested, put out of order, redirected and generally abused. So, if you sent in an application over the past 4-6 weeks and didn't get a reply from me, repeat, didn't get a return message from me, please resubmit the form. I'm sorry for the glitch but sometimes "it ain't pretty". Gary McDowell won't have to worry about this because when he submits his membership today, I will be waiting for him and we can talk about the old...Key West days! Don't lose contact.... What I've Been Up To: Greetings, I'm pretty new to the fleet, but I specially requested the USS Cushing here in Yokosuka, Japan, hearing that it was among the best sonar ships in the world. They weren't kidding! We are a test platform for new equipment before they distribute it to other vessels, so we get some pretty neat stuff. We break all the rules and even have a few pieces of STS equipment on board that make us the nemesis of all the subs out here. What I was wondering was if anyone has any experience in this part of the world and if they had any advice for operations over here. We do well in our exercises, but I was wondering if you had any suggestions for how to compensate for poor water conditions. Most of my division on board is new, so this could be a good time to take any operational experience that you guys have and use it to leave another good impression with my Chief and Captain. I already impressed them once, and with your help, I can do it again. -Hignett.

In 65 went to B-School and then to 26 BX factory school in NYC, then to Bath to Precomm the Biddle DLG 34. Commissioned the Biddle (2/67-11/67) in 67 and since all that school had counted as sea duty, got transferred to FASW SD in Mar 68. Was at FASW SD including MK 114 school until 7/71 then to Defense Language Institute prior to Advisory duty in Venezuela from 5/72-7/76 riding tincans (literally), gators and you name it. Then back to FASW SD from 9/76-10/80 followed by a tour at Surface Warfare Dev. Grp. (10/80-9/82), precom for Haylor DD997 (10/82-2/83) and then NAVMACLANT (2/83-4/84). I Then finished out 30 plus on the McCandless FF 1084 in September 1986 as STCM (SW). I served with or was responsible for everything from the QHBa to the AN/SQS-53A, the JM-1 Sonobuoy harbor defense passive system to the AN/SQR-18A. I saw ranges go from 300 yds range of the day off San Diego in 56 to over 34 mile surface duct active in the late 60s and 60 mile passive in the 80s. I give my detailed history because I know of at least two other Don Jones' and at least one was also an STCM. Going thru all 193 entries in the log I saw several people with whom i served, but nobody from on a ship. Come on guys, I didn't spend that much time ashore. Would like to here from others I've worked with including all former C/MCs or MCPOCs of FASW San Diego. Now working as training specialist at FTSCLANT in Norfolk.

What I've Been Up To: Hiya Girlz, Entered Navy in 73. Went to A1 & A2 School in Key West. Last graduating Sonar A school in Key West in 74. Went to C school in San Diego and then back to Charleston to pick up PARCHE(SSN 683)(BQS-13). Changed home ports to Mare Island in 77. That's all I remember(wink, wink). Got out in 79. Worked SONAR at PSNS(BQQ-5), Bremerton, Sonar on TRIDENTS(BQQ-6) at Bangor for 7 years, CTFM Sonar on ROVs for Underwater Recovery at Keyport, Wa.for 7 years, Fired Torpedoes on Range at Nanoose and Dabob Bay as Fire Control, Minesweep Sonar(SQQ-32) as Sonar ISEA Field Technician, and now I'm a psuedo A-Ganger working for the FAA as an Environmental Tech. Work on engine generators, power distribution, and HVAC. First time in 23 years that I have nothing to do with Sonar. I miss it. It's great to have a forum to chat with old shipmates. Take Care.

I'm trying to control myself here! Anyway, Happy New Year to you all and send your memberships to J.P. Johnson! NAS will do fine in 99! Jim Heimstead
