What I've Been Up To: I'm looking for shipmates who served on the USS McDermut DD677 in l959, the USS Patrick Henry SSB(N)599 from 1960 to 1964 (especially Dick Ross, SO1 (SS)and Ed Tshudy, EM2 (SS)), and the USS Nathan Hale SSB(N)623 from 1960 to 1962 (especially Hank Grannis, SO2 (SS) and Mark Latta, RM 2 (SS)). I was a member of the Blue Crew on the Patrick Henry, making the first four Blue Crew patrols. We set a submergence record of 68 days, 22 hours on our first patrol. We were the first missile boat to pull into Holy Loch, Scotland, back in the days of Bertrand Russell. Very exciting! I shipped over for two years and was sent to Groton, Connecticut for new construction aboard the Nathan Hale. I made one Blue Crew patrol on her, and decided to get out of the navy. I went to college on the GI Bill and became a jr. high teacher. I'm now an elementary school principal with the Bakersfield City School District. Being a principal is almost as fun, exciting and meaningful as was being in the navy and working with the greatest group of men I've had the pleasure to work with.
I hope some of my shipmates see this and respond.

What I've Been Up To: Hi, well, I don't know where to start. I went to school in San Diego in 74-75 and then sent to the USS Rathburne (DE/FF-1057) for the next 5 years. That's right, I kept turning down my orders to stay in Hawaii, dumb huh? Anyway, 4 WESTPACs and 1 drydock later I left for civilian life in San Diego where I took up a career as stand-up comedian. 6 years later I moved to New Jersey, became a coffeehouse guitar player/singer/songwriter, had a couple of kids, got divorced and now live on my own in a 24 foot travel trailer in a campground out in the pinelands. Life is good. Really, I'm having a great time. It's nice to stumble across a place such as this, especially during the free part, because so much of my growing up was centered around the NAVY and the great rate of SONARMAN.
Depending upon which one of the WESTPACs you might have made on the Rat, yuo may have known me as "Whimpy Burgermeister", "Dirtball" or "Hersh". And if you made the last one with my in 79 you definitely remember the band WARSHIP.
I do have some pictures available for anyone that would like to see them.
Anyway, hope to hear from some old friends. I miss you all.

What I've Been Up To: A hearty Hello to all of you who served in the greatest rate in the Navy. What a year this has been for the Sonar Association. Our membership is now approaching 650 members. The internet, along with our FREE one year membership plan has been largely responsible for this explosion in our numbers and we are very pleased. In October, the association concluded its 18th annual reunion in San Diego and it was very well attended, with long time members and new ones alike. Thanks to Bill and Earline Gray and other local folks for making it such a good time. On a personal note, I recently attended the reunion for the Richard B. Anderson (DD-786) in Orlando. Luckily, some of my favorite shipmates from the Edson (DD-946) live in the vicinity so we got together too. But before returning home, Doris and I took a car trip to The St. Petersburg area and visited with Bob Wild, a friend and shipmate I knew long ago on the USS Blue (DD-744). Bob and I had lost contact until earlier this year. It was really fun getting together again. I'll conclude this message with a wish for all of you that your upcoming Holidays will be filled with joy. Have a fantastic 2001!

The San Diego convention was by far the best ever. Those of you who did not attend missed out on a opportunity to meet new NSA members and renew old friendships. Think about Biloxi! Better yet attend. Jasper Love is OIC of this event, if you have never met Jasper, you are in for a treat, he is one fine gentleman who promises a wild and wooly 2001 reunion. We are pleased to announce the newest product in our equipment line:
Acoustic Systems Trainer for SONAR
The trainer consists of a 500 liter acrylic acoustic tank containing multiple conical beam shape, 192kHz, vertical or horizontally polarized, reversible operation transducers. The tank includes a target transport system with both active and passive targets. The transducers are powered by a 19" rack mounted console consisting of signal generation circuitry along with virtual instrumentation including a spectrum analyzer. Some of the experiments that can be demonstrated include: Passive SONAR, Active SONAR, Active SONAR - range resolution, Single transducer beamwidth, Single transducer beam plot, Doppler effect, volume scattering and acoustic noise jamming.
This is a very exciting product that is easy to set up and use. It has proven to be extremely reliable providing maximum benefit from practical laboratory use. The system is currently being used to train Principle Officers within the Royal Navy. As part of our military promotions we will be exhibiting the Sonar Acoustics Trainer at the up and coming IITSEC Conference November 27th through November 29th in Orlando, FL.
I would be interested in any contacts you might be able to provide me with that might have needs in the area of acoustics.
I would like to thank you all for your time and your potential interest in Feedback. Feel free to give me a call or e-mail me if you have any questions or require additional information.

Was supposed to be in for 2 years but they decided that a two year hitch didn't warrant a six month school so they extended me 3 months. Got out in June 54 as SOG3, whatever that is. Was on the USS Rodman, DMS 21, out of Charleston SC and made a Med cruise in 54.
Anyone out there that was in school then or on the Rodman?
I will be at the reunion tomorrow but only the one day (Friday Sept 29th 00)
We had an old QHB something or other on our boat. We had an experimental thing from EDO ( Seems to me the called in an SQS 10) that could switch transmit frequencies, like 28 kHz and up and down 3 or 4 kHz. The idea was that they could switch frequencies to get better transmission at times or to keep the "enemy" from recording and playnnig back on our frequencies, if they ever could have anyway. They couldn't get it to work well so they took it off again and we went back to the QHB

What I've Been Up To: I would like to direct this message to active ST's as well as to those who are recently retired. My company designs passive sonar systems and we have just completed an integrated intercept and acoustic analysis system for the Swedish Royal Navy. We are currently looking at marketing the system to the US Navy but we need to have input from operators who are current in the operation of existing systems.
We would also like to invite those who would like to test drive our system and have a chance to compare it with existing or planned systems.
For those who don't know who we are, we are partners with the company who designed and manufactured the BQR-22A system. I served as the software architect and software development manager for that product. (I was an ST1 when I left the Navy in 1973 and served on the Samuel B. Roberts DD-823 and the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. DD-850.)
Our current products are COTS-based and the user interface runs under Windows NT which makes it very easy to use. Training time for experienced operators is almost negligible as long as they are familiar with using MS Windows.
Again, if you are interested in test driving our system or would like to provide input into the features of the system, please email me or call me at 858-578-3778.
Thanks for letting me bend your ear.

Duty Stations: Second visit-joined association-am trying to determine what all the STG etc. ratings represent. We were just an SO in the ,50s. Have enjoyed all the comments, but have no idea what some of the equipment referred to is. My first ship was the USS PC 1172 and we barely had any sonar . We manually turned the bearing indicator on the "stack " and listened through earphones- something left over from WW II I believe. Later transferred to USS Knapp DD 653 and actually had what was termed "scanning sonar" with a visual display provided by a cathode ray tube. Served 4 years on active duty from 1953 to 1957 leaving with rating of SO1. Stayed in reserves and was commissioned in Naval Intelligence after college. Fond memories of the Navy and all who served with me. Have never seen anyone from those days in the past forty three years. R. G. Floyd Lt. USNR

Duty Stations: Boot Camp in 8/66 at Great Lakes. Then to BE&E School. Did sonar "A" school in Kew West 2/67. Followed by Sub School approx 5/67. Sent to Charleston with orders to the Sam Rayborn. They were filled up by the time I got there. Spent three months waiting for another boat. Finally got orders and served on the USS Thomas A. Edison SSBN610(G) from 10/67 through 7/69. Went through her overhaul at Charleston and then made two patrols. One of the more memorable times of my life. Good friends, good times, & good boat. Got out in 69 and landed a job as a cop, ready to retire after 32 years. Stayed in the Naval Reserve. At first, there were submarine reserve units. In 72, Rickover nixed reservists on "His Boats". Ended up on a number of Destroyers & FF's. Would like very much to hear from my old sea daddy James Thomson from the Edison. He was a 1st class ST at the time. Any help would be appreciated. He hailed from Barrington, RI.

I would enjoy hearing from former shipmates who were on the Mighty Mac for the last two year cruise to Vietnam by any ship. On the two year Vietnam duty, we were in the 'combat zone' for 19 months. Landing in California after being out of the states for 26 months has to be one of my all time fondest memories. Anyone know how to find John Wardon, Craig Mathis, Barney Matthews, or Steve Cole?

What I've Been Up To: Updating my email address. USS COMPTON (DD-705). Fleet Sonar School Key West 1964-1965 (SQS-23). USS WILLIAM V. PRATT (DLG-13). Does anyone remember going through hurricane Betsy on Key West? We had to "guard" the dependants in the school building at the height of the storm, and I remember having to go from one building to the other across the connecting bridges on the second floor. The wind actually blew me off my feet as I held on to the railings. There was all sorts of stuff (corrugated tin roofs, 55 gallon barrels) blowing around, and cars tipping over on their sides in the parking lot. After the storm we went down to the beach and saw all sorts sea life and Spanish cannon balls marooned in the sand.
And what about a mid-watch at the Osceola battery? VERY creepy! And the Seal Team trainees double-timing everywhere. And the little Peruvian sailors who trained there at the time. My running mates were Dave Beck, Gersham(?), John Waldron and one or two others.
Once aboard the PRATT, the guys in my division were: PAT McVEIGH, LARRY BOWKER, DON CROWELL, KANE, A.J. YOUNG, LEO SIMON, DAVIS, JOHNSON, JIM SIZEMORE, CHIEF IDE, MIKE QUIRK, and JIM BEARMAN. It wasn't a big division as we were teamed up with the torpedomen (ASROC).
This is a great site, and I hope to run into some of my old running mates.

I enlisted right out of High School went to Sonar School in San Diego. Made WO-1 Electech from STC while serving at FSS Key West. Advanced through 19 pay grades in almost 36 years retiring as an 05. I trained on the QHB, QGB, and SQS-4 in A school later attended factory school on the SQS-26 and later on the 26CX. I wrote the Sonar Maintenance Course. I served on the nucleus crew for the King DLG-10, the Bronstein DE-1037, and Knox DE-1052. I'll take the time, in the near future, to jot down a few experiences concerning the early day of the 26 sonar and being on the ground floor of putting the first non-Sangmo Sonar system online in the fleet. I'd really like to be at this year's reunion but I'm a professional Boy Scout - September to our REALLY busy time and San Diego is just too far. I have been a member since the beginning and really enjoy the fellowship. John keep up the good work!

Interested in possibility of re-joining the ranks.
Is Shorty Owens still with us?

What I've Been Up To: Hi to all the great ping jockeys out there. Great page here. Started in 68 in Great lakes then to FSS Key West for "A" school then SQS 29-42 Maint. and on to the CALCATERRA (DER-390) on the other side of the island. From there I went back to FSS for SQS-23 TRAM school and got lucky enough to catch the first PAIR ship, the BROWNSON (DD868), in Newport. Was there a year and went to PAIR school at FLEASWTRACENPAC and then right back to the BROWNSON for another two years. Went from there, back to FLEASWTRACENPAC to teach "A" school and OPS then attended 111 Fire Control for a systems code and on to the DEWEY (DDG-45) in Charleston. Made the normal cruises, and the favorite STANAVFORLANT and split toured to the LUCE (DDG-38) in Mayport. Stayed for two years and came back to Charleston for Instructor duty at the 14A2 trainers. Retired in 89 the morning hurricane Hugo hit Charleston and got hired on as a tech by Ford/Loral Aerospace shortly after that, getting to see the 14A12 installation and use it for a couple of years. Closed the trainers down in 94.

Bryant was from Hartford, Connecticut, Nivison was from PA, Bowers was from the Endicott, NY area. Have not heard from them since 1955. Also trying to locate John Norton who was from Teaneck,NJ.
If anyone knows any of them, just email me. Thanks.
I enjoy checking the Sonar Log & the news letter. Unfortunately, their reunion always seems to hit at about the same time as my ship reunion, J.C. Owens DD776.
Best Wishes & Happy Easter to all of you.

Oh, I was aboard the USS Blue (DD-744)as a sonar striker from 58 to 60. Then the Edson (DD-946). Now she's a beautiful museum in New York Harbor. After B School and MK 111 UBFCS I had a great time on the USS Richard B. Anderson (DD-786). Finally finished a rewarding, but short career as instructor at FSS Key West, B School - digital section.
Yes sir, Whalen slept through all my classes and still aced every test!

What I've Been Up To: I have been a member for five years, but due to personal and business reasons I have been unable to attend any reunions and try to see any old shipmates. So, I'll write a brief summary of my notorious career in sonar and if anyone out there remembers me give a yell (btaylor @ fone.net). I finished sonar A school in April 1959 and was assigned to the USS Davis DD-937 where I spent two years as a sometime sonar tech and it seemed like full time mess cook. I eventually defied the odds and became an STG3 and transferred to the USS Fiske DDR-842 where once again I fooled the Navy and was selected for STG2. After two years on the old Fiske I was really rewarded and attended SQS-26 school in Syracuse, NY with a group of the best party animals ever to wear the uniform. After our graduation we were all assigned to new construction with yours truly going to Avondale shipyard in good old New Orleans, where the party continued and I was promoted to ST1. Eventually the ship USS-Brumby(DE-1044) limped over to Charleston and was duly commissioned in the US Navy. But, due to many engineering problems we proceeded to Boston Naval Shipyard where we became a waterfront fixture. I now wrangled my way into MK114 school in San Diego and after graduation was assigned to the USS Bronstein DE-1043 and did two trips to the Tonkin Gulf where we did absolutely nothing. After returning I ended my naval career at the ASW school in San Diego.

Could prove interesting as well as educational to those of us out here in never never land called retirement. Have another idea, mentioned it before but we never acted on it. If ST's forwarded a list of Shipmates from various duty stations to John, name-rate-duty station and dates, he could and most likely devote a portion of the PJ as a search vehicle to locate former shipmates. Once located the individual can contact and get them signed up. Working on my list for the Caperton DD-650, Barry DD-933, and Ed Mc Donald DE-1043. Those of us attending the reunion can turn their list in to John there. Any feedback other than Johns? We all know he needs a little more work to keep him out of trouble.

What I've Been Up To: I found out about this site from the Ping Jockey newsletter that was sent to my ship. Great advertising technique! After reading all of the Deck Log entries, I'm beginning to wonder where the current active duty STs are. Then it just came to me, we are all underway! My Sonar career actually started as an STS with Boot Camp in S.D., then I was given my first taste of the "real" Navy on NTC for the one of the first Digital Electronics Training course (formerly BEE) in 1989. Then I was sent out to Groton for Sub School and back to S.D. for STS "A" school. I was medically disqualed from subs shortly afterwards because my ticker was acting up. I was at SUBTRAFAC San Diego in the Graphics Dept from '91 to '92. I finally cross-rated to OTA and went back to "A". I was at FLEASWTRACENLANT Norfolk and Readiness Training Facility in Virginia Beach in '92, then stationed across the street at the Naval Ocean Processing Facility at Dam Neck from '92 to '94. Then I went to NOPF Whidbey Island, WA from '94 to '98. All the OTs were merged with the STGs, so I jumped on the bandwagon, grabbed an SRB, changed my rating badge (again), and went back to Fleet ASW for reprogramming for the third time. I'm now on the USS DeWert FFG 45 out of Mayport. My question is: Where are all of the OTs? When we found out OTs were going to sea, most of them scurried like rats on a sinking ship. That's alright, though. You made it better for STG advancements by opening up more billets. Thanks! I figure I've been in just about every Sonar rate with the exception of AW (no thanks). I've met a lot of Sonarmen in each rate, and somehow all of you have disappeared off the face of the Earth. Well, I did catch up with an old STG in Virginia Beach. He was a shoe salesman (go figure).

Was on the USS Charles R. Ware (DD865) for 18 months. We went to Brooklyn for a major 2 year overhaul so I was transferred to the USS Gainard (DD706) for the remainder of my tour and was discharged in Key West also. Had a great time with some great buddies during my med cruise and also down in Gitmo.
Talk about a change in career I later became a career cop in Portsmouth NH

I will attend the parts of the reunion that I can but my work schedule as a Registered Nurse is really unpredictable. I am working at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla in the Spinal Cord Injury acute care unit. VERY challenging!! Give me a holler at my e-mail address--srcastle@simplyweb.net

What I've Been Up To: Just had to add some more words to my previous message. Lot of you old timers started talking about the AN/SQS-29 - 32. I knew I had graduated from the maintenance course for that equipment, so I did a search of my old mementos and found a certificate of graduation dated 18 December 1959 for AN/SQS-29-32 Maintenance Course #575 at FSS, Key West Certificate is signed by CAPT John Ferriter, CO of FSS at that time. Believe it or not, the certificate still has the gold embossed seal and the red ribbon. That certificate really brought back memories. That certificate was followed by one from the Advanced Sonar Course #570 (B school) dated 27 May 1960. Anyone around FSS at that time? After A school graduation in 1956, went to the USS Balduck APD-132 (anyone shave with the blades made from her hull this morning?) We had the AN/SQS-10 with the Tactical Range Recorder (TRR) and an Antisubmarine Attack Plotter (ASAP). The ASAP had a bastard? compass on it, or at least that is what we called it. The sonar shack on that ship was just aft of the bridge and most probably would not hold the technical manuals used to maintain the present day sonars. Didn't know much about ray path plotting in those days. Of course the subs must have feared the ship's Mk 10 Hedgehog Mount weapons (you got to be kidding). Also had 2 K-guns and the over the stern racks for depth charges. Remember the Mk 6 (ashcan) and Mk 9 (teardrop shape) depth charges? Ever wire brush one. When the leading BM said wire brush, we wire brushed. Don't worry, they let us use brass wire brushes. No danger that way (at least thats what he said). How about swabbing out the firing tube of the K-guns with swabs? Hey, I could go on forever. This is enough for now. More later.

Since that time I have had the distinct pleasure to meet many fine friends associated with the National Sonar Association, and look forward to every opportunity to spend time with them. It is my goal to enlist more active duty Petty Officers and Chief Petty Officers to ensure that this great organization lives on long after taps is played for our founding members. Take advantage of the free membership for 2000, attend the reunion in San Diego this year, and get involved! Sam

What I've Been Up To: It's nice to have have a forum where Ping Jockeys can "hang out". Served from 67 to 73.
Went to ASW school at San Diego from summer of 67 to fall of 68. My second class was the MK 111. I have lots for good memories from that school ... the "jungle rule" volleyball games, baseball, swimming, Lizard Center, an instructor that made me clean the head with a toothbrush because he didn't like me reading the newspaper while he was lecturing and hard and crusty rolls that could probably break the cafeteria's glass windows if thrown against it. I would love to hear from my classmates and roommates during that time. I remember a lot of the guys that were in the "A" class ended up going to sub school ... if you guys are around, email me. Remember our camping trips to Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead? Jack Young ... where are you? He went on to serve on the Tullibee in Groton.
First ship was on the USS Samuel B Roberts DD-823 (Fall 68 to Fall 79). Made a Gitmo cruise after a long and cold winter at the Boston shipyard and drydocked for most of the time next to the Constitution (we saved her from her mooring during one nasty storm on a Sunday when everybody was gone for the weekend). Anyway, the cruise to Gitmo was a refreshing change as well as a pain in the butt cause you couldn't go anywhere except to the enlisted club. You guys remember the cattle trucks? But as the ST responsible for the MK 111 Fire Control, I got to fire a few ASROCs ... as well as cook a bunch of potatoes that were stored in the afterburner of the ASROCs. Side trips to the Virgin Islands provided a nice relief though.
Made a Med cruise on the Sammy B in late 69 to late spring 70. Naples and Athens, Naples and Athens, Naples and Athens were our favorite spots. We were assigned to follow Russia's first aircraft carrier, the Moskva and we ended up following her (and the Russian fleet), for several weeks. Side trip to the Black Sea for a week seemed like an eternity when 2-3 Russian ships "escorted" us as close as 500 yards and with their search lights directed at Sammy B. I even spotted on sonar a sub that was submerged and slightly aft of the tailing ship. This went on for a few hours until it decided to surface
When we got back, the Navy decided to decommission the ship and I transferred to the USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. and served on the Joey P. from fall 70 to Spring 73. I made two Med cruises on the Joey P including one where we were "showing the flag" to the northern European counties as well as a jaunt up to the Arctic Circle. I would like to hear from the Joey P crew.
I am a software design engineer by profession and I'm currently the Program Director for a company that develops passive sonar systems for the US Navy as well as friendly foreign navies. For those of you who are currently on subs, I designed the software for the BQR-22A and then managed it's development. If you have used the 22A or are currently using it, I'd love to hear from you.
Ed

Duty Stations: Good to catch up on the sonar gang. Noticed Rick Baker questioned the AN/SQS-13. Yes Rick, there was such an animal. It was built by EDO Corp, I believe, for foreign sales only. It was basically an AN/SQS-4 upgrade with hybrid transistor/vacuum tube circuits vice only vacuum tubes. It had the worst documentation I ever saw! I had a couple while on Advisory duty in the early 70s in Venezuela. I'm also familiar with all the RDT mods, having had them on DERs in the early 60s and also in Venezuela. Hoping to see a lot of you at the reunion in San Diego. The wife and I plan on taking an extended driving trip and see some country.

I especially enjoyed having my equipment rooms directly below Mount 51. We'd always do some twin-gun 5-inch salvoes before heading out to ASW exercises. Those 4-400 A's were tough. Neat site; I hope to join up directly.

The '31 was a RDT modified AN/SQS-4 MOD 3 (12 KC) w/VDS. Later on in the '60's, they were MARK modified and turned into 'SQS-45 & 46 (VDS only). The systems without VDS were re-nomenclated to 'SQS-39 - 42. (all 4 mods) The original 'SQS-4 MOD 1 - 4 (Not RDT modified) turned into "SQS-49-52.
I spent several years with Ford Aerospace refurbishing and installing the old RDT systems world wide. I also did some 'SQS-17's and some UQS-1B's. We thought very seriously at one time about installing an SQS-17 transmitter in an SQS-4 system. That would be a hot machine.
I hope I didn't make too many mistakes above.
By the way, hello Lanny Maupin. We were at San Diego together.

What I've Been Up To: Happy New Year to all you "Ping Jockeys" out there past and present. Sonar has been the major part of my life, going from the QHBa Sonar to the newest SQQ-89(V)10 Systems on the AEGIS Destroyers being built here at Ingalls Shipbuilding. From my point of view dealing with the AEGIS community, the Sonar rate still provides the very best technicians and sailors to the fleet. BZ to all and keep up the good work in the new century.
