What I've Been Up To: I'd like to hear from old shipmates and friends along the way. Gene Klavon, your e-mail address needs to be updated. Help, anyone.
The SMO school listed below was a class of one student, me. Instructor was Bob Wilson, and I sat in on some SQS-26CX classes, etc. The Navy wasn't prepared to fill the 7660 Warrant billet for a Sonar Maintenance Officer on the DE-1052 Class Ships, and the job was discontinued mostly because of the high caliber of sonar technicians and their training.

What I've Been Up To: Hello everyone. A very good friend, former shipmate, and fellow sonarman, Jude Ulibarri contacted me out of the blue. This has sparked a need to get in contact with former shipmates and friends. We have been fairly lucky as we were able to get in touch with twelve or more from our AS division of the USS Barbey. Jude and I have been perusing the internet looking for any morsel of information concerning the Barbey. Seeing pictures of dismantled frigates leaved me with a sence of loss. I am fortunate enough to see the USS Knox being turned into a museum and the Barbey being leased to Taiwon. The fate of sister ships was not so fortunate. I saw sailors from 'C' school go to almost every one of the frigates. My ten years in the USN was a tremendous learning experience that I would never change. Since my departure from the Navy I have worked in the data storage and the semiconductor communities as an equipment technician and as equipment engineering. I have recently answered the call to help out some former colleagues with a start-up company in the photonics field. My main responcibilities are Facility Manager with support of all equipment. It has been a wild ride but a challenging one too. I welcome any former instructors, shipmates, or students to drop a line or two.

What I've Been Up To: I had placed an ad in the American Legion Magazine to have a reunion for the Charles P. Cecil DD-DDR 835. To my surprise, that had been done for the last eight years. I had never heard of it. I guess I wasn't alone because I received many telephone calls and e-mails. The reason for that reunion was forty years ago we had surfaced a Whisky type Russian submarine while on the Cuban missile blockade. We had the old AN/SQS-4 sonar system. I was acting leading sonarman as our leader didn't get back to the ship before we left port. It was Saturday, October 22,1962 and two duty sections were on liberty. The ship's crew was a bit short. We were one of the first ships to get underway for the blockade. On the 29th of October I was on the stack watch and found a good sonar contact. We tracked him for about 34 hours. Other then the sonar gang and the captain, everyone thought we had a large whale at first. but then the sub started to throw noise makers at us trying to lose us. On October 31st he came to the surface. We were sure glad of that! The captain received Legion Merit medal and the sonar gang each received Sec Navy Achievement medal. The other sonarmen were: Allen C. Tuell; Dale C. Whitsel; and Joel A. Smith.

What I've Been Up To: The wife and I had a great time at this years reunion. Jasper Love and Millie did a great job putting it all together and finding all of the neat places to visit. We took a 3 week vacation and spent a week of it on the Gulf coast. Wish we would have had more time to spend down there. Our thanks to all that worked so hard to put it all together. You made it turn out great in spite of the adversity all around us. We are looking forward to next year in S.C. It was good to see some of my old shipmates again. What I've Been Up To: Better late than never. What a wonderful reunion we had this year. Although my duty schedule did not allow me to fully enjoy all the activities, it was an enjoyable event. It was nice to meet other members, swap sea stories, and compare the old and the new. The banquet was outstanding, with the very moving speech from Vadm Tidd.
I hope that all who came enjoyed the southern hospitality offered by the Mississippi Gulfcoast and by our host Mr. Jasper Love.
See y'all next year.

What I've Been Up To: Returned a couple days ago from the 19th Sonar Association Reunion, held in Biloxi, MS. In spite of the atrocious attack on our country on 9/11, our group did not cancel or alter our scheduled reunion.
Due to heightened security, we were not allowed to tour Litton-Ingalls shipyard as planned but all other activities went off without a hitch. It was one of the best reunions yet, with almost all the registrants in attendance. The hospitality was outstanding, the food and beverages were great, and the warm interactions with members and shipmates was as good as it could get.
Our banquet featured an emotional and timely speech by Vadm Emmett H. Tidd, USN(Ret)who spoke about the events of 9/11 and the nation's response. Admiral Tidd is a NSA member and his speech will be reprinted in the next issue of "The Ping Jockey." Photos and other details will follow in the next Ping Jockey and in the Sonarshack web site.

We are held hostage by terrorist in our own land and it is time for us to stand up and take charge. We are the strongest country in the world and all eyes are upon us now. Will we stand by and let someone put us to our knees?
Say your prayers to God that our leaders have the wisdom to strike back and send a message around the world that we will no longer take this kind of treatment.
We have lost our basic fundamentals as one nation under God and we need to get it back. It will be Your sons and Grandsons who will feel the fallout from this event.
Regain your pride and patriotism and cry out "We will not take this anymore!"

What I've Been Up To: Can't seem to find any sonarman shipmates from the USS Spangler (DE-696) so how about any one who went through Fleet Sonar School in San Diego in the class of 6-49? If not in that class the Spagler was assigned to the FSS at San Diego from 1950 until the late 50's. I was on the Spangler until Oct. 1952. If you went through Sonar School in San Diego during that period we may have met. The other ships that were at the school were th USS George (DE-697), USS Raby (DE-698), USS Marsh (DE-699), (the Marsh later went to Korea), and the USS Currier (DE-700). The Spangler is the DE that had two Sonar controls located down in the IC room. Each Sonar control was equipped with a QDA, TRR, OKA, and QHB(a).
Duty Stations: USS Spangler (DE-696). The ship had the first complete MK 105 Attack System with the MK 5 computer, MK1 Mod 6 Attack Plotter, UQC Underwater Telephone, and firing controls all located in the Underwater Battery Plot in the enlarged area where the Sonar Shack had been. Interesting note: Robroy mentioned about playing music on their UQC, when ours was first installed we were there first DE and maybe even the first surface ship to have a UQC and during an exercise with a couple of submarines they ere talking back and forth on there next plan of attack. We heard their every plan and acted accordingly and as a result made several kills we might not have made. After the exercise was over our Captain R. R. Law came into UBP and using the UQC thanked the submarines for their assistance.

What I've Been Up To: Thoroughly enjoy reading the deck log. My wife and I were looking forward to attending the 2001 reunion. Unfortunately, situations at home and work will prevent us from enjoying the many friendships that were established at the last reunion in San Diego. I'm still looking for shipmates on the USS Patrick Henry SSB(N) 599: Dick Ross, Lou Klienlien, and on the USS Nathan Hale SSB(N) 623: Hank Grannis, Mark Latta. Robbie and I hope to attend the 2002 reunion, especially if it's on the west coast - preferably in San Diego. We will miss seeing Millie Smith and Jasper Love in Biloxi. What a fun couple!

Duty Stations: USS Spangler (DE 696) Feb.49 to Oct. 52 The ship was the first ship on the west coast equipped with the Mark 5 computer system with included QHB-a, Qda, Oka, TRR, AP, UQC, with 2 sonar controls for training at the FSS each sonar control which were located by the IC room wer equipped with a QHB-a, TRR, and QDA and a switch to shift from one sonar control to the other also had MK 15 60 degree trainable hedgehogs and a 19 depth charge pattern with 14 K guns all could be fired from the underwater battery plot which was located where the sonar hut was originally located, it had been enlarged 2 times during the years. The AP, Mk5 computer, UQC underwater telephone and could be fired either manually or we could let the computer do it. We could get a course to steer and time to fire in less than 30 seconds and we thought that was fast, computers today do that in nano seconds but then they don't have all those 12AU7 tubes. (Gosh!)

What I've Been Up To: Today, I'm getting ready to leave home for a couple of days to visit Port Angeles, Washington, to participate in the dedication of a monument to Richard B. Anderson, CPL, USMC who was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in WWII. This is significant to me since I spent a couple of fantastic years on the USS Richard B. Anderson DD-786 and the sailors of this great ship have helped to make this monument possible. Thanks to all of you.
Duty Stations: Please check some of my earlier entries for my other duty stations but I was DD-786 from 1962 to late 1963.

What I've Been Up To: Don Jones on April 30th mentions a few familiar equipment designations. On the USS McMorris DE1036, we had a Terne-III ASW Rocket System manufactured in Norway. The rocket loaded in the cocked up position, then followed the computer input to its target. It accepted inputs up and until .1 second before launching. Not bad for its days ('64). Range was about 1,000 yds. was about 8' in length and carried a fairly good explosive load. The great part about the cabinetry itself was that it had A/C inside to reduce component failure. If you remember rapping your legs around the stack, it put out a great deal of heat. One of the STG's had placed a fifth of liquor in it to keep it cool. The captain came through with visitors one evening while moored up and opened the cabinet to point out the effectiveness of the A/C. He looked in...couldn't have missed it... and closed it up without a word. Captain Lewis never showed it off after that! This is a NO S..T! sea story.

What I've Been Up To: Almost every time I sign in, I make sonar contact. RE the question about the shrinking cursor for Hedge Hog attacks. That was the Mk 1 Attack Plotter. One of the best tools I used in A-School. In the early days in the fleet it was the MK 102 or the MK 105, with flaming piss pot, Hedge Hogs, K-guns, Catapult launcher for the Mk 32 Torpedo, poor boy launcher for MK 43 mini-torpedo and the big tubes amid ships for the MK 35 and 37 torpedoes, all powered by an SQS-4 and SQR-8, or the RDT. Oh the good old days when the fleet commanders sent a DER with max speed of 22 Knots after a November 200 miles away headed home at 26 Knots. Wonder if that still goes on???

Duty Stations: Boot, Fleet Sonar School, S.D., USS O'Brien DD-725 (2/51 - 2/55) Got into a discussion about early scanning sonar on "Tin Can Sailors" chat room last night. Would appreciate any input on several questions that arose. 1. When was the AN/xxx equipment designation adopted throughout the services. 2. When did scanning sonar type QHB & QHB-A enter service. 3. Was the difference between the two that QHB had relative bearings only? 4. I quoted from fading memory that SQS-10 & SQS-11 were 20kc xmit freq. & differed only in that SQS-11 had more power. 5. SQS-10A & SQS-11A were identical to 10 & 10A except for xmit freq. which was 25.5kc. I also would like to hear from anyone who knows about the automatic fire control for hedgehogs using the predictor line on the GE attack plotter. What was the designation for the fire control unit?

What I've Been Up To: Still looking for shipmates who served on the USS McDermut DD677 in 1959, USS Patrick Henry SSB(N) 599 in 1960-62, especially Louis Klienlien, SOC(SS), Dick Ross, SO1(SS), or Kerry Browning, MM2(SS), and the USS Nathan Hale SSB(N)623 in 1962-64, especially Hank Grannis, SOS2(SS), or Mark Latta, RM2(SS). Decided to get out of the navy in 1964. Went back to college. Graduated from Fresno State University in 1970. Became a jr. high language arts teacher. Received a Masters Degree from California State University, Bakersfield in 1978 along with a Reading Specialist Credential and Administrative Services Credential. Decided to leave the classroom and get into administration in 1979. I'm now an elementary principal with the Bakersfield City School District in Bakersfield. I have the pleasure of working with an excellent faculty and staff with great kids and parents. Looking at retirement in another year or two. However, nothing beats the professionals I had the pleasure of serving with in the navy. It was a thoroughly enriching period of my life. My wife and I attended the 2000 NSA reunion in San Diego. Can't say enough about the outstanding people we met and the fun we had. Thoroughly enjoyed boarding the USS Decatur and seeing all the modern equipment. Look forward to the next reunion. Hope some shipmates see this and respond.

What I've Been Up To: Second entry. Made 'Sonar Contact' on my first entry, want to say, GREAT SITE. To all you ping jockeys out there here is an axiom: Sonarman is the best rate in the Navy, I believed it when I first started out, and I am retired, still carrying that belief. You guys talking about FXR: Been there, done that. It was followed by Fanfare. On the last ship I was on, I was Chief, and I told the guys to paint the fairlead chocks so they wouldn't have to paint them. I got away with it, and it is something I always wanted to do when I was shining them. How many of you trained on Searchlight gear? I did. Those of us who made those dark, cold, wet, BT drops will remember that! The newest ship I was on, the Talbot (DEG4) we had a 'launcher' in the bulkhead way back aft that you shoved a disposable little unit through and got a readout. No more fun of wrapping it around everything and destroying it. Never lost one, but I did make one look like a banana! Remember, the DASH (disposable antisubmarine helicopter)? I have a picture of one that went into the drink from the Carpenter (DD825) after we were initially fitted. It does not look healthy. Mk 5 Attack Director? Been there, done that! 102 System? Yep! Flaming pisspot? Yep! Picture of OUR ship through a periscope? (means you are dead) Yep! Picture of the carrier we were screening through a periscope? Yep! OF COURSE, it happened on somebody elses watch! Another tip, if you talk about the O'Bannon, John S. McCain, Samuel B. Roberts and I don't know how many others, SOME of us remember the O'Bannon when her hull number was DD450 and so on. I could go on, but I will leave you with this: Sometimes I had so much fun, I didn't collect my pay, I thought I didn't deserve it!! Let me know if you believe that. It has been great!!
Duty Stations: 9 cans, or can types, previously listed.

What I've Been Up To: I'm interested in input from any Tin Can Sonarmen of the early fifties. Especially those ships equipped with standard search gear of the time..(i.e.), QHB-A or SQS-10 search sonar, WWII range recorder & GE attack plotter. Some ships were equipped with what I think I remember was called a "TDT-8", a device linking the predictor line length of the GE attack plotter to the Hedgehog mounts for automatic fire control. ( My ship, DD-725, O'Brien) lacked this device so firing times were called by phone). (The only experience I had using the system was in attack-teachers.) It seemed like a very good device for that time...Roy Thomas

What I've Been Up To: Hello to all my fellow Ping Jockeys! I would like to clear up, how the "NO PARKING" Yellow Curb, in front of the Gate Bar in Key West, FL came to be! During 1954-56, the Gate bar was a favorite watering hole for me. I always parked in front of the door. It was a legal parking space, informally reserved for ME! One day some damn fool parked in MY spot! That night, I went back to the base and got a can of yellow paint. I painted the curb in front of the Gate Bar, yellow! No one parked there any more but me. Two weeks later, I got a parking ticket!

What I've Been Up To: Always amazed at the beauty of this website and this deck log. The guy who signed in right before me, Matt Moran, was a friend in Key West during my time and I have often wondered about him... Now I know. We have made contact. This is not all that unusual. I know of several "connections" having been made recently. Best to all of you.

What I've Been Up To: Thanks again for this great website. My wife just told me that WE could go to the 2001 convention.
Have been thinking about BT drops, what do they use now to check the temperature/depth? Remember picket tours off the Oregon coast in the winter, green water over the fantail and a CS ensign on the bridge, asking "what you mean, it's too rough"
I wonder what happened to the "millions" of smoked slides we sent back to DC.

What I've Been Up To: WRT: Roy Thomas' item in the Ping Jockey of Jan/Feb 2001....Yes indeed, I remember BT drops under darken ship. We were in WESTPAC for several years including the infamous IGY (International Geophysical Year) We had to do BT drops up the "gazam".
The most fun was doing one on the midwatch under darken ship and wrapping the BT around the boom at high speed. Of course, we were not responsible!
I'm talking about TF77, aboard DD755, USS John A Bole....what great memories!

What I've Been Up To: Was just reading about BT drops; brings back fond memories of being in the middle of a drop, when they started firing a 5"38 right over my head. Was useless as a ping-jockey for a couple of days. Two years later, on an MSO, where the winch was located on the 01 deck, the which stopped suddenly......... next morning, we found our BT on the fantail.

What I've Been Up To: (More Korea scuttlebutt) USS O'Brien,DD-725, along with Walke - DD-723, was one of the first west coast DD's to get the underwater telephone. It was a great innovation & fascinating device for all of us, (who previously were able to communicate with submarines only by very slow Morse code keying). On slow steaming watches we discovered that it also served as a device for exchanging phonograph record play with the Walke. It didn't take long for this to come to a screeching halt, as the transducer, (9KC), emitted a piercing audible squeal located right under the Chief's quarters forward. They seemed to have a singular lack of music appreciation...

What I've Been Up To: I signed the deck log just a couple of days ago & since have had great fun pouring through the records of the past three years.. I noticed that many have added comments about their experiences. I wonder how many old ping-jocks remember the "dreaded dark-ship BT drop?" In the fall & winter of 1952, operating with TF-77 in the Sea of Japan, we lost FOUR in the space of two months.. within a month of arrival in WestPac, constant weather, corrosion, and Mt. 3 gunfire dispatched the small revolution pointer on the BT winch & the rest I leave to any Sonarman's imagination, (i.e.)"wrapping the boom", running all the cable off the drum, & also winding up all the cable with BT still attached, (until all the cable was wound up, of course). All of this while trying a) not to drown, b) not to freeze, see "telltale fluorescence indicating the approach of the returning BT" (In the Sea of Japan?) FAMOUS INSTRUCTION.."The BT drop should be made at speeds under 15 knots." Righhhhht! Roy Thomas.
