What I've Been Up To: I left the navy in May 1968 after 13 years and 5 kids to help Mom, we had 50 good years. Lost her 11 Mar 03. Retired from Y-12 Nuclear Weapons Plant, Oak Ridge, TN after 30 years. I live alone in the log house we built and with the tools I have, the natural hobby is wood working. The internet is new to me as I got my first computer about a year ago and just found the navy sites last month. Thanks to you folks I've already found some shipmates. I would like to contact Lanny Maupin. I found him on the Deck Log but can't make his address work.

What I've Been Up To: Still listing and selling homes in the eastern Contra Costa area. Enjoying Ship reunions and of course the annual reunion of the National Sonar Association, of which I've been a member since 1982 and now serving as President. It's a great association of men and women. If you are reading this and haven't yet submitted your membership application I urge you to do so. Your trial membership is completely free and without obligation.
Duty Stations: Boot camp at RTC San Diego (1957), followed by temp duty at NAAS Brown Field, Chula Vista. On to Sonar "A" School in San Diego. My first ship was the USS Blue (DD-744) where I enjoyed my first Westpac cruise. Swapped to the USS Edson (DD-946) in 1960 to get another cruise. Left her for Sonar B School and Mk 111 UBFCS. Went aboard USS Richard B. Anderson (DD-786) for my final Westpac cruise. Finished my 9 year career as a "B" School Instructor in Key West from early 64 to late 66. Great Times!

What I've Been Up To: I retired last year as a K-5 elementary school principal after a 33 year career in education. I now supervise student teachers under the auspices of California State University Bakersfield. Because of my membership in the National Sonar Association I have come in contact with ten former shipmates. Last month my wife and I met Jim and Gail Ayres for lunch in Palm Desert, CA. It had been 40 years since I last saw Jim. We reminisced and laughed about situations long forgotten. Thank you, NSA!

What I've Been Up To: Transferred to Fleet Reserve October 1970. Defense Contractor supporting NAVSEA Sub sonar Code for 23 years. Retired in 1997, traveled in Europe and throughout USA, lived briefly in Bloomington, IN and Vancouver, WA. Settled on the Texas Coast in 2001. Deck overlooks Aransas Bay, fishing and boating . . . a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

What I've Been Up To: Ok, if anyone is monitoring this log...an update. At 44 y/o I'm back in the reserves, have been for two years now. I was with Assault Craft Unit One, riding LCMs around. Now I'm on the east coast, with an Amphibious Seabee unit. Still not working in my rating (IT, not the STG I was before) but about to get 2nd class back and will probably change ratings to something construction related. I still love both IT and sonar, but not much chance to make rank in those ratings in the reserves. I'm also cross assigned to a Marine Inshore Underwater warfare Unit. If they ever get their hands on me I will probably get a chance to use my sonar skills again, but for the time being I am only assigned on paper..no drilling with them.

What I've Been Up To: I found this site a couple of years ago and have located and visited some of my Shipmates from The Sonar research Ship USS Glover (AGDE-1). Some of us will attend the reunion in Newport this year. The Glover was a modified GARCIA ( FF-1040)-class fast Frigate.There is an MSN website 'USS GLOVER' that sonarman , Steve Gottlieb (ex-ST1) started. What I've Been Up To: After leaving the Navy in Dec. 1979 I attended Bible school and became a pastor. In 1992 I made my 1st short-term mission trip to Cherkassy, Ukraine. As of this date I have spent 15 years in pastoral ministry and done mission work in 28 foreign nations. My time in the Navy whet my appetite for travel. What I've Been Up To: After getting out of the Coast Guard, I worked for the local power company, then as a sales rep for a pottery manufacturer. Later I owned and operated a welding shop. We then moved to Tulsa where we eventually became owners of a small independent oil company. What I've Been Up To: I have been all over ever since I left the Navy in 1994. I worked as a CNC Machinist in Phoenix, AZ for about 5 yrs. I came back to the University of Arizona in Tucson to finish my Electrical Engineering degree. I have one more year to go until I graduate, FINALLY!!!!
Duty Stations: I entered boot at RTC San Diego in 1988 (Co. 123) and graduated in August 1988 and went to FLEASWTRACENPAC for STG 'A' schoool. Then over to BE&E at NTC and then back to ASW for SQS-35 IVDS Maint. Finally out to the Fleet for sea duty, I went to the USS Knox(FF-1052) and spent 24 months aboard and made my first WESTPAC(I had a blast!!!). I came back to ASW for AN/SQQ-89(V)1&3 and off to the USS Ford(FF-54) as a SQR-19(V) type. On board the Ford, I made CENTAM 93 and my last WESTPAC in 94. I had a blast in my time in the Navy and there are no regrets serving in the best rate. Bravo Zulu to all STGs and other rates, as well as veterans and family members of the Greatest Navy in the World!!!!!!!!!!! Surface Navy - Professionals at Sea!!

What I've Been Up To: Left the Navy in November of '75 as STG1 after seven years of service. Worked at a variety of electronics jobs until 1983, when I began a 20-year run as a technical writer. Most recently I'm a service training course developer for Xerox Corp. In the last two years I've been re-establishing contact with shipmates from the USS Knox (DE/FF-1052) and have attended two reunions.

What I've Been Up To: After Retiring from the Navy I was employed by Raython Service located in Norfolk VA.for four Years, when I applied for employment with the Civil Service, Defense Dept. at Norfolk as a Sonar Engineer, where I worked until I retired in 1987. My Wife Jeannie and I returned to Burnside Kentucky, where we have lived until 2001 when we moved to Somerset.We Lived on Lake Cumberland at Burnside,with a 32'Chris Craft Boat until we got tired of that, then we moved to Somerset where we are still close to the Lake, with Golf and The American Legion keeping us Both busy,along with visits to Va Beach VA where our Son Gary is Employed with the US Army at Fort Story, Jeannie and I have a Grand Daughter, a Grand Son and Two GreatGrand Children. Burnside is up for a Wet Election this Month, and we're hoping for a Positive response so that the area can progress, with added employment and New Bussiness'.

What I've Been Up To: After leaving active duty in Feb. '88 (I was medically DQ'd from boat duty - nothing else seemed worth staying for), I worked for Honeywell as a Computer Repair Depot Supervisor. I was also recruited by officers of a Naval Reserve unit at the Pentagon (Asst. CNO (SW)), where I helped develop Surface Fleet training programs in Sonar Analysis. In 1989 I went to work for DoD as an Aerospace QA Inspector, initially working on fighter aircraft and helo avionics (F-16,F-14,A-10,B2,LAMPS,F-111,etc.). After 18 months I was transferred to NASA programs, where I remained until I retired on disability in 1999. In 9 years I had direct QA oversight of key NASA contracts for programs including the Hubble Space Telescope(all servicing missions), Space Shuttle (Main Engine / AC assemblies/RCS assemblies/Low Gain Antenna), Space Station (Main / Secondary Thermal Panels) Astronaut Tools (Pistol Grip/Power Ratchet Tools, MLI Blankets,etc.) and more small satellites than I can remember. In Sept. '99, I had my 2nd major spinal fusion (1st one in '96) which left me unable to work effectively, so I retired on disability. Additionally, in 1993 I started training in Martial Arts (Tang Soo Do) and received my Black Belt in 1996 (it's a lot harder when you're old..)

What I've Been Up To: I am a Navy contractor for BAE Systems North American Division providing Programmatic and Field Engineering support to the Naval Sea Systems Command, Program Executive Officer for Undersea Warfare System's AN/SQS-53D(V) and AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 Cruiser Conversion Projects. I work out of the Washington Navy Yard Center facility, Washington, DC. I support the In-Service Support Functional Group Director whos responsibility is to manage the Fleets Legacy Undersea Warfare Systems currently installed in todays CG 47, DD 963, DDG 51 Class and the FFG 7 Class ships. I provide program management and system engineering support, and recommend budgetary decisions to resolve Fleet issues with previously stated equipments. I also represent the U.S. Navy during manufacturers formal factory testing of these equipment prior to sell-off and delivery to the Navy. I coordinate Fleet issues seeking the most efficient and cost effective resolution of issues pleagueing our sailors who maintain and operating these Commercial-Off-The Shelf, Open Architecture designed, software-run equipments. What I've Been Up To: After more than 4 years in the Navy, got out, toured the country, went to college (2 colleges), held a myriad of electronics-related jobs (see how that cross-training came in?), and on a whim decided on a job with the National Park Service (Trail Crew). Twelve years later and I switched to the Bureau of Land Management and have led an active life fighting fire and lately, setting fires (Controlled Burns). Along the way I married and divorced a couple of times and the third time was a charm...still happily married after more than 10 years and I have two fine sons.

What I've Been Up To: I was in from 11/56 to 1/61 and again from 8/65 to 7/69. Saw three tours in Vietnam. I was discharged in san Diego in July 1969 and returned to Houston. I went to work as a Pulmonary Function testing equipment bench technician for Ohio Medical Products and spent the next 23 years with that company. I worked my way up to Regional Sales Manager. What I've Been Up To: It was my father who was in the Navy but I am searching for information on him and his ship the USS Wasp CVS-18. He died when I was 7 so I don't know much about him. I thought if I could locate some of his shipmates I could learn more. His name was Arthur Nickerson. He served active duty 11/3/60 - 10-22-64. Reserve duty until 11-2-66. He was an Aircraft-Mechanic Helper, rank E-3. He was discharged at USN Receiving Station, USNS, Philadelphia, PA. He tranferred for reserve to USN Reserve Manpower Center, Bainbridge, MD. I do know that he was at Gauntanomo Bay in November 1962. I would greatly appreciate learning anything that anyone remembers about my father and his service aboard the Wasp. Also any information of where the Wasp was and what it was doing during that time.

What I've Been Up To: AFTER DISCHARGE, GRADUATED FROM TEXAS UNIVERSITY. RETURNED TO TEXARKANA AND JOINED THE FAMILY BUSINESS IN 1949. SOLD THE BUSINESS IN 1994 AND RETIRED. NOW TRAVEL AND PLAY WITH THE GRANDKIDS.

What I've Been Up To: Been here in the Pittsburg area since 1975. My wife Doris and I have a real estate office and we are actively listing and selling property in our area. Not thinking too much about retiring because I like to spend money!
Sonar association work has been very rewarding and I am looking forward to seeing you guys and gals in Newport later this year. I'm still trying to find a couple of shipmates - one is John A. Bell on the Edson with me in 1960.
Duty Stations: I was on three Tin Cans, the Blue, The Edson and the Richard B. Anderson. My last 3 years were wonderfully passed in Key West with Grady Stewart and his gang of digital computer experts.
